There is a known phenomenon called vertebral artery dissection which can occur during chiropractic cervical neck manipulation. When it occurs, part of the vertebral artery wall may be dissected resulting in reduced blood flow to the brain. If a clot forms, it may travel to the brain sometimes leading to a stroke.

Though rare, vertebral artery dissection can cause significant brain damage. Our office represented a woman who was never informed by her chiropractor about the risks of performing cervical neck manipulation. Her chiropractor also failed to refer her to a neurologist to determine the cause of her headaches. The case settled for an amount just below the doctor's policy limits.
