Brain Injuries During Medical Emergencies

Some individuals who sustain a concussion or a brain injury may, initially, appear to be okay but brain injuries can result because of a secondary cause (or insult). Brain injuries can occur when there an increase of pressure on the brain is due to edema (swelling) and/or bleeding. The increased pressure results from the limited expansion space that the brain has within the skull compartment. If accumulated fluid is not addressed, it produce increased cranial pressure (ICP). Management of the ICP is crucial to prevent brain damage resulting from the pressure reducing blood flow and oxygen to brain cells.
